24th November 2008 Pre- budget report changes reduces vat from 17.5% to 15.0% with effect from 1st December 2008 until 31st December 2009 after which it returns back to 17.5%. To effect this change: Change the 17.5 in the sales spreadsheet vat column for December 2008 from 17.5 to 15.0 which automatically changes the vat percentage on sales and purchases from that month onwards.

Corporation tax rate from 1st April 2009 is to be kept at 21% for one year. If a company accounts package with a year end date after March 2009 was bought before today's date 24 November 2008 the tax rate in the financial accounts workbook, corporation tax sheet should be changed from 22% to 21%.

All packages bought after 24 November 2008 contain the above changes announced in the pre-budget report this afternoon.

10th July 2008: Introducing  ASC Partnership Plc which has a National Association of Independent Finance Consultants operating under licence offering a range of commercial business finance products and business loans for new start up businesses and existing businesses wishing to raise finance for working capital, leasing, commercial mortgages and business expansion and development: The financial services page also has links to the Business Link pages relating to Government Grants

13th May 2008: Income tax changes for the financial year 2008-09 were announced in parliament today by the Chancellor, Alistair Darling, who stated the individual personal tax allowance would be increased from £5435 by £600 to £6035 for this financial year. The increased personal tax allowance will apply to all income for this tax year and will be backdated to 6 April 2008. The financial effect being a £60 tax reduction in the week that the new tax code is applied which is 7 September 2008. To effect this change DIY Accounting payroll clients should enter an amended tax code of 603 in the tax code row under the previous tax code on  the employee details section of the payroll package with the date applied 07/09/2008. If all employees earn less than £40,835 this is the only amendment required to the employee details sheet of the payroll software.

The Chancellor also announced a reduction in the higher tax rate threshold by £600 from the previously announced 40% higher tax rate threshold of £36,000 to £34,800. All payroll software packages downloaded after 13th May 2008 incorporate the changes required to correctly calculate the income tax for employees earning over £40,835 whose lower tax code would not generate the £60 tax refund. Employers who have purchased the 2008-09 payroll software prior to 14th May 2008 and who also have employees earning over £40,835 who pay the 40% higher tax rate should return to the download page and re-download the new payroll file and manually enter the existing details. No changes are required to the payslips or revenue forms files.

For businesses with sales income over £64,000 the Self-employed (Full) tax return is required. The previous 25% writing down allowance on existing assets is reduced to 20% which includes motor vehicles not categorised as commercial vehicles. If the total written down value of all assets at the end of the year is under £1,000 then the whole of the written down value can be deducted from taxable profits in 2008-09.
